Start exploring Belmar at the one-acre plaza situated in the center of the district. Surrounded by outdoor cafes, it serves as a gathering venue for summer music concerts. In the winter the plaza is transformed into an ice skating rink and social hub for the holidays.
In Belmar, there are plenty of fun outdoor events throughout the year. Spend a lazy summer Sunday getting to know your neighbors while strolling the Market at Belmar; a unique tour through a European-atmosphere market with over 30 vendors. Purchase fresh fruits, veggies, flowers, and a variety of tasty treats. Once September rolls around, it’s time for the annual Festival Italiano. The Lakewood Heritage Center, located on S. Yarrow St. in Belmar Park showcases the history of Lakewood and the many changes, inventions, and lifestyles of the 20th century. The museum boasts over 10 historic structures, 30,000 artifacts, a festival area, and an outdoor amphitheater.
Catch a flick on one of the 16 screens at Century 16 Belmar theaters (S. Teller St.) or take out your frustration on the pins at the trendy Lucky Strike Lanes. The Sustainable Neighborhoods Program gives Belmar residents the opportunity to become active partners in making Lakewood a vibrant and sustainable city. Residents participating in this unique certification program use guidance from the city staff to organize workshops, projects, and events that enhance the livability of their neighborhood and reduce residents’ ecological footprint.
The ingenious car sharing service, Car2Go, has expanded to the Belmar area! This is the first time Car2Go has grown outside the central Denver home service area, and is a result of residents supporting alternative transportation as a part of Sustainable Belmar. It’s easy to have access to a car when you need it. After registering with Car2Go, just swipe your access card on the windshield of an available Car2Go. The car unlocks, the key is in the console, and vroom, off you go! Now residents can get rid of that extra car that doesn’t get used as much after having moved to Belmar. There’s even a handy smartphone app that tells you where the nearest available Car2Go is parked.
The A to Zs
Belmar Elementary School (part of JEFFCO Public Schools) is a small neighborhood school located in central Lakewood on S. Garrison St. There are two kindergarten classrooms and two classrooms for each grade from one through six. They also teach students with significant learning disabilities in their two Center Program SPED classrooms. Other elementary education opportunities for young minds are Bear Creek K-8 School, Dennison Elementary School, and Devinny Elementary School – all in Lakewood.
Children can attend middle school in the Belmar/Lakewood area at O’Connell Middle School, Dunstan Middle School, Creighton Middle School, or Carmody Middle School. Then it’s on to Lakewood High School for your child’s high school diploma.
